Car Trips and Back Pain Summer time is upon us again! It’s that magical time of year when the days are longer, the kids are out of school, and road side produce stands are popping up all over South Carolina. With the onset of summer, many families begin hitting the road for some quality rest and relaxation away from home. Unfortunately for many people, long periods of time spent in the car means back pain. Whether you are the driver or a passenger, sitting in a car for prolonged periods can result in lingering back pain that can last for days and ruin a vacation. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to help relieve back pain while on a road trip. For instance, if you find that your car seats lacks adequate lumbar support, you can roll up a towel or pillow and place it between your lower back and the seat cushion for extra support. Applying an ice-pack to the area where you are experiencing pain is another way to reduce discomfort. Since most back pain is accompanied by inflammation, ice therapy can slow back swelling, numb sore tissues, slow the nerve impulses in the affected area, and decrease tissue damage. A great way to prepare your back for a long road trip is to visit a chiropractor. Since no one wants to spend their vacation in the doctor’s office, it is a good idea to schedule an appointment with a chiropractor prior to leaving home. Chiropractors specialize in maximizing nervous system and musculoskeletal performance, injury prevention, and self-healing of the body if and when injuries occur. While many people might not associate long distance car trips with back injuries, millions of Americans experience lower back pain due to prolonged car travel. So this year, before you pack up the kids and head out on the open road, visit a chiropractor first and make the most of your summer vacation.
