Caravanserai: Diplomats of Drum Crockett, TX— Caravanserai is a three-part residency program that brings artists from Malaysia to the US to showcase their art & music. Crockett is one of four cities in the whole US selected to participate in this exciting and dynamic program. The artists typically spend a week in each city performing and doing educational outreach programs. The first part of this program is the Diplomats of Drum, a percussion and world music group from Malaysia that will be performing at the Crockett Civic Center on Tuesday Oct 7th at 7:30pm. This show is presented by the Piney Woods Fine Arts in association with KIVY/KMVL, Houston County Courier and the Messenger as part of cultural exchange program with Arts Midwest. Tickets are available at pwfaa.org or by calling the PWFAA office at (936) 544-4276. The Diplomats of Drum formed in 2005 as a team of young street performers who grew into a popular percussion group. Celebrated for their captivating showmanship, the drummers added melodic folk and pop musicians and evolved into a dynamic band whose core lineup has been creating a unique blend of global music since 2010. Now regulars on the Asian festival circuit, the Diplomats of Drum are true ambassadors dedicated to sharing Malaysian culture in concerts and workshops for people of all ages. Their debut single “Forza” topped the Malaysian charts in 2011, and their live album Malaysia: Behind the Drum launched in May 2013. The Diplomats of Drum celebrate musical and cultural diversity with festive performances that have been called “joyously Malaysian,” and the band members describe their genre as “music without borders.” Classical Indian vocals backed by Gaelic chant. Traditional Malay rhythms fused with Latin groove and powerful Afro and Bhangra beats. The subtle sounds of the sitar and Malaysian sape backed by a percussion drumline—this is the unique soundscape of the Diplomats of Drum. David Fraher, president & CEO of Arts Midwest, notes, “Malaysia is a dazzling symphony of races, religions, and customs where multiple ethnic groups celebrate multiculturalism in harmony. We are thrilled to offer Caravanserai audiences the unique opportunity to explore this diverse cultural landscape through live arts engagement experiences with dynamic Malaysian artists.” The featured artists will conduct performances, film screenings, educational workshops, and discussions in four communities: Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University (Atlanta, GA) University of Florida Performing Arts (Gainesville, FL) Society for the Performing Arts Houston (Houston, TX) Piney Woods Fine Arts Association (Crockett, TX) Caravanserai is produced by Arts Midwest, the nonprofit regional arts organization serving America’s upper Midwest, on behalf of the nation’s six Regional Arts Organizations.
