Carcinisation hypothesizes that other animals evolve into crabs. And who wouldn’t want to be a crab? They don’t go straight, they walk sideways. They use vacancy chains to manage sociality. When you reach with tongs into a barrel of crabs at the market, what do they do? They cling to each other, hoping against hope to fend off culinary violence by forming a collective unit. They know that what lies outside the barrel is not individual freedom, but imminent death. Hidden amid the discourse of crab mentality is the possibility that they may actually serve as a model for diasporic sociality.
