Cardinal Lourdusamy Passed Away His Eminence Simon Cardinal Lourdusamy, Prefect-Emeritus of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, passed away this morning at 5.05 a.m. (Indian time) at his residence at Via dei Corridori, 64, Rome. His Eminence was 90. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Basilica on Thursday morning (5th June). As per the information available from the Archbishop’s Office of Pondicherry, the funeral of late Cardinal Simon Lourdusamy will take place at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral Church, Pondicherry. The time and date of the funeral have yet to be finalised. Let us pray for the repose of the soul of Cardinal Simon Lourdusamy, one of the most distinguished ecclesiastical dignitaries the Indian Church has ever produced. May his soul rest in Peace! Cardinal Lourdusamy was born in Kalleri in Tamil Nadu as seventh of twelve children, of Annamarie and Duraisamy Simeon. Cardinal Lourdusamy is the elder brother of priest and theologian D S Amalorpavadass, who was killed in an automobile accident while travelling from Mysore to Bangalore. The two of them are credited with playing most significant roles with the implementation of Vatican II Council reforms in India and leading others to do the same. He was ordained to the priesthood on 21 December 1951. Saint Pope John XXIII appointed Fr. Lourdusamy Auxiliary Bishop of Bangalore and Titular Bishop of Sozusa in Libya on 2 July 1962. He was ordained as as Archbishop in 1968. Saint Pope John Paul II created Lourdusamy Cardinal in 1985. He became Cardinal Protodeacon (the senior Cardinal-Deacon) on 5 April 1993, and served as a special papal legate to the funeral of Mother Teresa on 13 September 1997. On 5 April 1993 was appointed protodeacon. He chose to become a Cardinal-Priest in 1996.
