“Care more about people than your product or service and you will be unusually successful”~ Dani Johnson If you have been taught by your company to simply plug your product, service or opportunity several times a day on Facebook, Google, Twitter and any other social media site that you can get your hands on, you may not be experiencing great results for your business. If this sounds like you, you might want to stop now and re-consider your way of doing business altogether and this is why… I have never been comfortable with what I call typical ‘sales pitches’ – in fact I have always said that I am not great at sales – something that I discovered was actually a good thing… … you see, my inability to sell means that I did what came naturally instead. It felt natural to me to just be honest with people and help them as best I knew how… When I first started my home business in September 2011, I was told by someone in my upline at the time that I needed to have great sales skills and even more importantly that I needed to know how to close a sale….. both of which nearly had me running for the hills as this was the total opposite of what I wanted to do – in fact, this made me think seriously about whether I was even capable of doing this business! I had no experience in sales (at least not as I knew it) and hard sales definitely wasn’t what I wanted to do all day long so I decided I had two choices at the time. To quit the business or to do it my way instead. Being headstrong (and a little stubborn!), I decided to do it my way instead. I built my product blog and Facebook page and I simply started posting what I thought people may want to know about if they were looking for the product I was selling. Ok – so this method wasn’t so quick as some of the other more ‘hard core’ methods out there but it felt good to me to do it this way and I also enjoyed it as I love to blog and motivate people. So it felt like I plugged away at this for some time and I started to wonder if I would ever grow my business – then suddenly momentum started to happen. I started getting comments on my blog posts, asking questions. I started getting more likes on my Facebook page. I started getting comments on my posts that I always took time to like and reply to and I started getting messages in my inbox that I always made sure I replied to – even if the person had already bought from someone else and just couldn’t get a reply from the person they first bought from. I didn’t help these people with the view that they would move over to me – in fact that could not happen because any repeat business would go to the original distributor (quite rightly). I did this because I wanted the business to retain its great reputation. I did this because I wanted the individual to get the help they deserved. I did this because it felt good and right to do so – I simply focused on helping and caring about people. Suddenly, I was getting regular orders for my product and my email inbox was full of new messages with enquires and orders – all because I simply decided to… ‘care more about people than your product or service’! Everything I am learning with The Internet Lifestyle Network reinforces this even further – just one of the reasons that I love being part of this community. I realise now that my decision to break away from the typical sales ‘pushy’ way of doing things meant that I had a natural gravitation towards making ’people’ my product instead. Quite honestly I would not choose to do it any other way. Over 2 years on, I still don’t have great sales skills and I am certainly no expert on closing sales, but I do care about people. I want them to have a good experience when they speak to or message me, I want them to feel supported in my presence and more importantly I want them to feel like they are a unique person in their own right and not just another website visitor or Facebook page like. People are your product – whatever you are selling right now so remember – always care more about people than your product and service and you will be unusually successful… I know – because I have seen it first hand!
