Career Day Company Spotlight: Apple Inc. This company known for its ever-progressing innovation in the realm of technology and design has its headquarters located in Cupertino and attracts many creative types in our department whether its for an internship or a career. Today we had the opportunity to chat with GrC graduate and current contracted production designer at Apple, Jaclynn Nishimi (pictured far right) all about her experience and what traits would make up a competitive applicant for Apple. Catch Apple at Career Day next Friday! What is your position and what do you enjoy the most about it? -My position is a contracted production designer in the Localization Department at Apple. The team is full of great people (mostly from Cal Poly) and the work is rewarding once you see it come to life. I am also really enjoying improving and learning Photoshop skills. What is the average workday like for you and what is it like working for Apple? -I live in San Francisco, so the commute to work is a bit of a trek. I usually take the Apple bus with Jen Vucinich (another GrC grad working at Apple) from SF near my apartment to my office in Cupertino. The busses have wifi and are free, so it’s an easy ride. Once arriving to work, we receive a project and go over it briefly with a project manager. Then, typically using Photoshop or maybe InDesign, we complete our assigned project, and then quality checking each others work. Most projects are completed by a group, providing and easy outlet to reference and ask questions. We usually walk to an Apple cafeteria or sometimes go to Infinite Loop for lunch. (The food is super good and very cheap!) There is a lot of work to get done and can get crazy at times, but it is awesome working at Apple. They have great transportation perks, awesome food, a neat campus, and the occasional Beer Bash on campus with free beer and music! It also feels like an extension of Cal Poly over here with the large amount of post grad students working at Apple. Though it is a large company, everyone is welcoming and chances are if you walk around campus you will see some people you recognize. What skills or classes from GrC have you used the most? -I carried with me knowledge of InDesign, Illustrator, and the little Photoshop I learned. Strong communication skills, neatness and organization of files and projects (thanks to Lorraines classes), and a knowledge of print has proven helpful in generating files. What skill set is needed to work there as a GrC grad or to intern there? -Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (primarily Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator) and the steps in reproducing products for different mediums. Additionally, critical thinking and problem solving skills, ability to work quickly and efficiently, and a good attitude. What kind of person would be a good fit for the company? -For this particular position, someone would need a strong attention to detail and strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills. A lot of the work you learn as you come across it, so being able to be self-sufficient is key. It is a fun, yet fast paced environment where efficient work ethic is needed.
