Career Opportunities: Operations Technician (8302) Requisition ID 8302 - Posted 04/02/2013 Job Description Print Preview Apply Save Job Email Job to Friend Return to List TECHNICIAN Location: Mobile, Alabama GENERAL SUMMARY Works under the direction of the Operations and Maintenance Manager and is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all process and auxiliary equipment. PRINICIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Conducts routine tours of the plant to inspect equipment; provides feedback to control room operator and to other employees. Complies with all site safety requirements and procedures. Identifies safety hazards and takes corrective actions as necessary. Checks daily consumption rates of chemicals, gasses, fuels, water and other consumables; monitors inventories and initiates action to replenish when appropriate. Performs electrical and mechanical inspections, trouble-shooting, and maintenance tasks under direction of Management when assigned. Investigates plant problems, incidents, accidents and unusual events, and provides analyses, recommendations, reports, and appropriate follow-up plans. Performs routine operational test and adjustments on all power plant systems and components, as required. Develops, assists, and recommends operations and maintenance related procedures. Performs and maintains housekeeping standards and duties. Performs routine preventive maintenance on all systems and equipment; supports corrective maintenance efforts on selected equipment when properly trained or supervised. Performs other duties necessary to fulfill plant requirements. Displays routine proficiency improvements toward becoming qualified as Tech II. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES A journeyman electrician certification is preferred and possess the desire and capability to move up to a position of higher responsibility. Ability to read and write effectively in English and to do basic mathematics; high school diploma preferred. Knowledge of power plant mechanical and electrical equipment, including motors, pumps, boilers, fluid systems, chemical handling, water treatment systems, pollution control equipment, AC and DC electrical distribution and control systems, etc. and associated maintenance functions. Ability to complete site-specific qualification program. Knowledge of power plant safety, policies and procedures, especially in area such as chemical handling, high-energy systems, confined spaces, fire suppression, first aid, rotating machinery, and heavy equipment. Ability to operate valves, switches, controls, keyboards, and other devices associated with power plants. Ability to use basic hand tools, portable electric and pneumatic tools, and basic rigging equipment such as winches, hoists and slings. Ability to locate, trouble-shoot, and adjust defects in mechanical equipment and/or maintain, install, modify and trouble-shoot plant electrical systems and equipment. Willingness to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime and respond to off-hour call-ins when contacted by phone. Must become qualified to operate various plant mobile equipment, including fork lift and Wagner chip dozer, front end loader and dump truck. It is crucial to the outcome of job tasks that the employee is able to: talk or hear. The employee in this classification will be required to occasionally lift objects of up to 50 pounds in weight. The employee will be required to frequently lift objects up to 10 pounds in weight and carry up to 35 pounds occasionally. In addition, the employee will push or pull up to 70 pounds in weight occasionally. Vision requirements for this position include close, distance, color and peripheral vision along with depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. WORKING CONDITIONS The employee performs job duties in a power plant environment. In the course of working at the plant site, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, including wet and/or humid conditions, and routinely works near moving mechanical parts and/or machinery. The employee is occasionally exposed fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud at the plant site.
