Caregiver Help Word of the Day - CONTRAST As 2014 comes to a close, I’m struck by the contrast in the experiences we’ve had this past year. We had some bad days, and a few very scary moments, but as we prepare to greet the new year we are extraordinarily grateful that we can celebrate my husband’s recovery from back surgery. We decided to take a trip so we could escape Oregon’s winter rain. Our plan was to get outside and exercise vigorously every day. We’ve been in Sedona, Arizona for a few days, and it’s been unusually cold and windy. Yesterday it turned warm and sunny and we were finally able to get out on a hiking trail. Although Alex can’t walk as fast or as far as he could a few years ago, he’s well on his way to being healthy and strong again. It was a glorious afternoon! The photo of snow was the scene that greeted us outside of our timeshare this morning. Surprise! Cross country skiing was NOT part of our vacation plan! I know that a lot of you will face some very difficult days in the coming year. Some of your plans won’t work out. Things will happen that will throw you off track. Schedules will get upended and you’ll have to deal with disappointments that are much more significant than bad weather. There are no shortcuts or easy exits when you are a caregiver, but if you can focus on the sunny moments, and celebrate each good day, it could help you maintain the emotional energy you will need to get through the dark moments of caring for those who cannot care for themselves.
