Caring for our relatives and friends when they are in need is a challenge that the vast majority of us will rise to at some point in our lives. At any one time 1 in 10 people in Britain is a carer – the majority of them, of course, still women. It is a testimony to the importance of families that so many of us are prepared to make the personal sacrifices that caring can involve in order to help our loved ones lead fulfilling lives even in the face of incapacity or disability. Our support and appreciation for carers is therefore not just fundamental to ensuring that those of us in need of care are able to receive it, but goes right to the heart of our values of our communities. I applaud today all those unspoken heroes facilitating this process.
