Caring with a paralyzed patient, especially a spouse, is not an easy task that nobody would like to be in my situation. You need to be a special person with a battery of patience, a compassionate heart, and caring attitude. Coping with the progressive insecurities and depression is more challenging everyday. Although there are anti-depressant pills to take care of that but personal support is more workable. Hence, aside from the 3 oclock habit, we do the 5 oclock ritual too. Its about binisaya therapy treatment every 5 am. After taking off the overnight gabon leaves wrapped on his left arm and leg, lukewarm water placed in an empty Tanduay long neck is rolled into his feet while a lapad bottle of lukewarm water is evenly tapped in his paralyzed arm. And we do hot compress on his face with a gel/stones face mask and exercise his facial expressions, a therapy learned from his Physical Therapist. We do observe everytime the physical therapist arrives for home service so we can do the activity more on the patient with proper pointers. Since he is on a soft diet, meals are given every 4 hours in order not to make him cranky. Having prepared a written activity schedule, both the carer and the patient are mindful of the activity to be followed especially the medication. I have never been a night person but I am coping up out of necessity. With a never missed midnight and early morning snacks to keep me awake, no wonder my fbs results always ranges from between 9-11 against a normal range of 5.8. Good luck to me !
