Carl Sagans protegé is clear evidence of a common phenomenon in academia. The successive generations of disciples are almost never as expansive in their vision, or magnanimous as their founder. There is a great, great difference between a true Ph.D. and a glorified technician. Glorified technicians have a great deal of technical knowledge, but they forget that the Ph. in Ph.D. stands for Philosophy. We not only add to the philosophy of our disciplines by making novel discovery, but we are expected to comport ourselves with respectful humility in the face of other disciplines. This coconuts problem is that he uses his doctorate as a platform to ridicule a discipline whose subject (God) cannot be empirically observed or measured. He also never attacks Judaism or Islam. Only Christianity. I would have more respect for him if he attacked Islam with the same fervor, or even at all. Instead, he isnt even a principled atheist… Hes just a fool.
