Carla Laemmle (Posted June 15th, 2014): Hey guys! I know this is sort of late, but I just wanted to post this. For those of you Universal classic horror film fans, you have probably heard already about the terribly sad news. Carla Laemmle, niece of Carl Laemmle, the founder of Universal Studios, and the last surviving actor in Phantom of the Opera (1925) and Dracula (1931), died this past Thursday in her home in Los Angeles. She was 104. You can read more in the link posted below. Right after I heard about it the following day, I sent an email message to Rosemary Hilb, Carlas great niece. I told her that I was so deeply sorry to hear about the lost of her great aunt. That she mustve lived a fulfilling and happy life, with growing up on Universal Studios, and acting in two of the most important and iconic horror films of all time! And that despite not knowing her, only watching her in video interviews, she seemed like one of the most sweetest and liveliest souls ever! I also wished for her, Carlas family and closest friends to find the strength inside themselves to help them overcome this tragic, trying ordeal, and that Carlas soul is finally at rest, be it in heaven, or among the rugged peaks that frown down upon the Borgo Pass. To me, its a sad day when one of the last living links to silent cinema and the first talkies has passed on. Interestingly enough, I was thinking about Ms. Laemmle the day that she died, unaware of her passing. I wrote to her last year I believe, cause I wanted to send my Dracula VHS, as well as a few other things, for her to sign, because she is a living legend, who had worked with three of my favorite actors of all time: Bela Lugosi, Dwight Frye, and Lon Chaney, in that order! Anyways, I remember receiving a letter back from her great niece, Rosemary, giving me her fan mail address to send her stuff to sign, which she only charged $2 per item I believe. For one reason or another, I procrastinated getting her autograph until I decided to finally send my VHS off in a few weeks to her for her to sign. But once I heard the news, my heart was stunned; stunned! It just goes to show that you have to act while the iron is hot. With that said, I hope that Carla has found peace now, and may her fantastic cinematic legacy continue to thrive onwards, as undying as the Universal Monsters themselves. P.S. Below is a short interview with Carla talking about her life growing up at Universal Studios and her film career!
