Carla saw the Disease Control doctor (Dr. Pappas) this past week - TopicsExpress

Carla saw the Disease Control doctor (Dr. Pappas) this past week and he released her from his care. It took a while, and going to two different hospitals, to finally find his office but we did it. He was actually at the kidney and pancreas transplant unit when we finally saw him. He told her that the longer she could remain off antibiotics, the better chance she would have to respond to them when needed in the future. He told her that she could actually rebuild her system so that she wasnt so resistant to antibiotics. That was encouraging. She remains on a, break, from treatment for her cancer until at least after the first of the year. We will see her oncologist again the first week in January. Dr. Leath told us that he may have another treatment by then or if she is still feeling well, he may prolong the break a little longer. He told her about a nutrition study in treating cancer that Carla has now applied for. It is geared towards women who have recurrent Ovarian Cancer. When she talked to one of the study nurses on the phone, she was told that the only hold back might be her weight--she doesnt weigh enough. They really prefer obese patients for the study. I asked Carla how much we needed to pack on her to get her qualified--after all it is the Holidays! They said that they would still consider her and get back to us. We really liked the disease control doctor that treated her E coli infection. Dr. Pappas took the time to sit and talk with us. We told him that a former Alabama teammate of his was also Carlas Internist (Dr. Kulback). Both Dr. Pappas and Dr. Kulback played football at Alabama under Bear Bryant in the early 1970s. Dr. Pappas told us that no less than FIVE of his teammates that year went on to become doctors. He said that Bear Bryant was always encouraging his players to set goals and pursue higher standards. It always amazes me, that in the metro area of Brimingham/Hoover with over a million people, we always seem to find people who are connected to each other as Carla is treated. Carla will get to enjoy the Holidays and our family without dealing with treatment this year and hopefully she will continue to regain strength. Merry Christmas from the Allisons. God continues to Bless us.
