Carol Moseley Braun was born Carol Elizabeth Moseley on August 16, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois. She was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992, becoming the first African American woman to earn that distinction. After graduating from University of Illinois in 196 with a degree in political science Moseley Braun attend the university’s law school. She earned her law degree in 1972 and began working as assistant U.S. attorney n Chicago. The following year, 1978, she held her first political post as a Democratic representative to Illinois House of Representatives, where she was known as an advocate for social change, working for reforms in education, government, and healthcare. In 1988, she was elected recorder of deeds for Cook County, Illinois, overseeing hundreds of employees as well as the agency’s multimillion-dollar budget. Moseley Braun made the leap to the national political arena in 1992 when she ran for the U.S. Senate seat, becoming the first African American woman to win election to the U.S. Senate. Moseley Braun tackled many issues as Senator, including women’s rights and civil rights. She served on several committees, including the powerful Senate Finance Committee. She continued to support education reforms and called for more restrictive control laws. She served office until 1998, losing the election by a small margin. After leaving office, Moseley Braun was appointed U.S. ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa by President Bill Clinton in 199. She left that post at the end of the Clinton Administration. A career-long advocate for education, she went on to teach at Morris Brown College for a while.
