Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the median nerve gets - TopicsExpress

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the median nerve gets compressed at the wrist while it is passing through the carpal tunnel. The median nerve travels down from the neck, through the arm and into the palm of the hand. This important nerve provides sensation and controls the palm side of the thumb and first three fingers, and also provides motor function to the muscles of the thumb and fingers. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway at the base of the wrist where tendons and nerves enter the hand from the forearm, and as the median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel, it can get squeezed by the other components of the tunnel. The result of the nerve compression may be pain, pins and needles, weakness, swelling or numbness in the palm, fingers and wrist.
