Carrie Underwood will be doing a live version of Sound of Music on December 5...I believe, but dont quote me! I have a history with Sound of Music. I first did it at the New London Barn Playhouse, in New London, New Hampshire...quarter of a century ago. It was directed by Bill Maher...now totally white-headed! I was cast as Captain Von Trapp, initially played by Theo Bikel. The girl in the show who played Maria was perfect for the role. Yes, we had bunches of hook ups, then called an affair. I fell in love with her...did I mention she was gay? She was...it didnt matter to me...she was hot! Thats not my point, my point is just how good was I as the Captain? Let me put it this way: it wasnt until after the show had CLOSED that Bill and the producer, Norman, let me read the reviews. I never completely read anyone of them, I stopped when it got to this point: The show was wonderful until Don Clare, my stage name at the time, came on stage... I read no more and walked out of the office. See, I thought it was okay that the Maria and Captain duet was cut, and Maria took over from the emotional Captain and sang Edelweiss...isnt that the way its done? Bill Maher was just great to me and thats when I grew to respect him. Fast forward 10 years. Same place, same play but Im cast properly as Max. Bill was not the director...he was cast as Captain Von Trapp! I gave him no end of shit...and he learned the hard way that the only person who could play the Captain was Theo Bikel! It was written for him! Its that way even today. Oh, yeah! I was funny as Max and got good reviews! Poor Bill! The two of us will give our evaluation of whomever plays the Captain on December 5! Watch for it!!!
