Carrie posting: Common Core 1st grade math homework= confusing. What the heck? Watching my husband who teaches advanced high school math (and made a 34 on the Math ACT) stumbling through first grade math is hilarious. These ten frames are kicking his tail. I really feel stupid. Curt: So, Ross tell me. What do you add to 10 to make 16? Ross (dead serious): One Curt: Seriously, Ross. One plus ten makes 16. Ross (dead serious): Wait, wait, no I was wrong. Two. Curt: Yep, son, you nailed it. 10 plus 2 equals 16. He is so stressed about the ten frames and getting the circles right that good, common sense has flown straight out the window. I am not saying the kid was a genius when we sent him off to school, but I am not kidding when I say I think he might be getting dumber. At this rate, I am just terrified that as he gets older the kid will get robbed blind by a gas station clerk when he pays for a 20 oz coke with a $20 bill and only gets $1.50 back. 45 minutes later we think we have figured out how the ten frames work with the circles that can be moved up or restructured and the five different ways of showing his work, but Im telling you they are going to have to start giving us some examples or at least explicit instructions. Write to show how you make a ten. Then add. What the heck kind of instructions are those for a six year old who describes every single day as fine? Oh man, weve got a long road ahead of us! Not dogging public school educators or the curriculum, I am on the same road. Just sayin its a little crazy.
