Carsales Comments (4000 characters) Attention to detail is this hand-crafted reproduction of the priceless Mercedes-Benz SSK made by one of Australias leading coachbuilders (now retired). The SSK (the German initials for Super, Sport, Short) was produced from 1928 to 1932 and was the last car developed by Ferdinand Porsche for Mercedes-Benz before he left to form his own company. Fewer than 40 were made and of these half were racers (Rennwagen). Only four or five originals survive and a 1929 example was sold at auction in September 2004 for US$7.4 million! A special car ordered by wealthy racer Count Trossi is now owned by Ralph Lauren and has achieved the remarkable double of winning both the 1993 Pebble Beach Concours dElegance and the 2007 Concorso DEleganza Villa dEste. Classics simply dont come grander than the Mercedes-Benz SSK! The SSK was the worlds fastest car at the close of the Roaring Twenties. Changes to the Formula 1 rules in 1928 made sports racers eligible and the SSK quickly notched up victories. In 1929 Rudolf Caracciola won the 500 Miles of Argentina and the Cordoba Grand Prix. But 1931 was the finest year for Caracciola and the SSK. They won the Argentine and German Grand Prix as well as that greatest test of all road cars, the Mille Miglia. Caracciola even led much of the Monaco Grand Prix before heavy fuel consumption and tyre wear dropped him back to third behind two nimbler Bugattis. In many respects this astonishing replica is superior to the original. Its aluminium body is fitted to a full chassis. Period-style opening doors facilitate ingress and egress. It certainly uses less fuel! A 2.8-litre straight six Mercedes-Benz engine drives through a four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive for relaxed cruising (110km/h is attained at 2200rpm).
