Case Study 2: The Remnants of the Greenhouse In the year 2198, the thermal expansion of the ocean, as well as melting glaciers and ice sheets as a result of global warming, have caused sea levels to rise significantly. Many low-lying regions and coastal communities were slowly submerged by the rising tides. Increasingly unpredictable weather patterns did not help, since flooding was becoming more common place. Earth was turning more and more into a water planet. The wealthy and powerful, having enough resources and ability, built artificial islands for themselves that were immune to flooding. Others who could, moved to higher land, where property prices were becoming increasingly expensive because it offered a drier, more hospitable living environment. Migration patterns thus shifted. The richer you were, the more you were able to move to dry land and build a home not submerged in water. Those with the right connections were also able to secure themselves a more desirable living space. The poorer citizens had to endure living in the less expensive coastal areas, where the squalid conditions meant diseases were more rampant. Many had also chosen to seek refuge in neighbouring countries, although they did this illegally, since they were too poor to simply migrate, unlike the wealthy.
