Casey On Clean Water Clarafication Dear Mr. Clay: Thank you - TopicsExpress

Casey On Clean Water Clarafication Dear Mr. Clay: Thank you for taking the time to contact me about the Clean Water Act. I appreciate hearing from you about this issue. On April 21, 2014, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released a proposed rule to clarify regulatory jurisdiction over U.S. waters and wetlands. The proposed rule is available for public comment until July 21, 2014. Once the comment period is closed, EPA will review the comments and respond in the next version of the rule. I understand that while some Pennsylvanians support these regulations, others have concerns about the proposed rule. Under the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, also known as the Clean Water Act, states are required to establish water quality standards for all bodies of water in the state. Pennsylvania has a number of important watersheds in our state, such as the Susquehanna River (as a part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed), the Allegheny Ohio River (as a part of the Mississippi Bay watershed), Lake Erie and the Delaware River watershed. Legislation such as the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act and the Endangered Species Act provide the regulatory framework for America to be a world leader in environmental stewardship. Despite the advances that have been made, the task of protecting our environment is far from complete. I understand that there are a number of bills that have been introduced regarding the Clean Water Act. Should legislation regarding the Clean Water Act come before the full Senate, please be assured that I will keep your views in mind. Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future about this or any other matter of importance to you. For more information on this or other issues, I encourage you to visit my website, casey.senate.gov. I hope you will find this online office a comprehensive resource to stay up-to-date on my work in Washington, request assistance from my office, or share with me your thoughts on the issues that matter most to you and to Pennsylvania. Sincerely, Bob Casey United States Senator
