Cassandra is 65 and applied for the home repair program in September 2014 to address a rotting bathroom floor. Her application said “the toilet is old and falling through the floor - it’s difficult and scary to use. And there is only one bathroom in the house!” At the visit to the home to determine scope of work and budget, it was discovered that Cassandra’s statement was NOT an exaggeration! Through the generosity of UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company (UnitedHealthcare), insurer of the AARP Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, Habitat staff and volunteers were able to replace the rotting portions of the subfloor, install a bathtub surround (Cassandra wanted to save and reuse the 1950s tub that was in good condition) and new plumbing fixtures, and replace drywall and the bathroom vinyl flooring. Without the help of UnitedHealthcare, insurer of the AARP Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, Cassandra’s toilet may well have ended up in the crawlspace!
