Cast your mind back to 2008 and that incident when President Bush was ‘hijacked’ by a journalist from Iraq who chucked his shoe at him. Now, in the Arab world, such an act – throwing your shoe at someone – is one of the most offensive insults you could offer to anyone. However, its questionable whether this was known to President Bush at the time. Nevertherless, what we do know is that sales of the particular shoe in question – the so called ‘Bye Bye Bush’ shoe – have rocketed by over 400% since the incident and the manufacturers have had to hire over 100 new staff just to handle the demand. So what’s the marketing lesson here? Well, here’s what it’s not – it’s not to chuck things at Heads of State. But if you can think creatively to get your chiropractic service in the news or somehow link it to a newsworthy issue you might start getting some publicity traction.
