Casting Bread on the Waters “Cast your bread upon the waters, “ A wise man stated so long ago. “And you will find it many days hence.” It’s one of life’s lessons many do not know. One’s life does not consist in possessions, But to many that is their life-long quest. Their lives are fixed on their acquisition, With amassing a little more we are obsessed. When things that our hearts are set on, Are mangled, destroyed or lost there is gloom. So set not your heart on earthly treasure, Where moth, rust and thieves consume. In the twinkle of an eye possessions can vanish, For such is the fickle finger of fate. Ownership is often so hard to determine, Do our treasures serve us, or them do we venerate? So neither hoard nor amass things, And let not such earthly treasure seduce. Our possessions will someday belong to others, If we can’t take it with us, it’s not a treasure but refuse I’ll cast my bread upon the waters, And be surprised at what will return. One of life’s many and rewarding lessons, That I was slow to learn. M. T. Whallete © 2004
