Casting Call for Independent Short Film CASTING CALL FOR ROMANTIC COMEDY Synopsis “Muddy Girl” is a short film about Brittney, a quirky and awkward girl who falls for Justin when she literally falls at his feet. Dressed to the nines for a night out, she tries to be confident and cool but her actions reveal the klutzy and unique woman she really is. Will Brittney be able to reach out of her comfort zone and impress Justin? Character Bios Brittney: Female, Age: 18-28 Brittney, a quirky and sometimes awkward girl who rarely leaves her comfort zone, is going out on a limb. When she runs into a handsome young man, she must make a decision on whether to play it safe or go after the mysterious stranger and see where fate will take her. Justin: Male, Age: 18-28 Justin, cool and confident, is instantly drawn towards Brittney when he sees her slip and fall in front of him. Justin can’t help but tease the young woman any chance he gets but beneath her quirky actions and goofy mistakes, he sees in her something special that he won’t let pass him by. RESTAURANT - NIGHT Brittney, early-20s, dressed to the nines, hurries down the street towards the restaurant. She passes a MAN, leaning against a wall, smoking a cigarette. They exchange a glance. The man smiles at her and Brittney looks back at him, a little dazed from the smile. She looks forward again, and smirks to herself. Just as she smirks, her feet slip from under her and she falls flat on her face. The man is shocked by the sight. He puts his cigarette out, hurries over to Brittney and bends down to help her. JUSTIN Are you OK? Brittney shakes herself off as if she just awoke from a daze. BRITTNEY Yeah, I just didn’t see that hole back there. They both look back at the smooth pavement and then back at each other. The man is sarcastic and playful. JUSTIN Yeah, a lot of people have been having that problem. Brittney is taken a back for a few beats, a little embarrassed, she stares at the man while he looks so smug. BRITTNEY So what, you’ve just been standing here watching people fall all night? 3 JUSTIN Not exactly. The man smiles a crooked, charming smile. He extends his hand and helps Brittney to her feet. She quickly looks him up and down. Justin notices the mud all over Brittney’s dress and smiles, Brittney notices Justin’s eye’s looking below her face. BRITTNEY So what’s your name, Creep? Taken aback, and over doing it a little, he puts his hand on his chest in question. JUSTIN Creep? You’re calling the man who saved your life a creep? Brittney drops her jaw and looks at him flabbergasted. JUSTIN (con’t) Well then you wouldn’t mind if I called you Muddy Girl. Brittney straightens out her clothes and tries to regain her cool. BRITTNEY Well, creep, most people just call me M.G... Brittney looks around, and starts to walk past the man. She is cool and confident, unlike anything she has ever felt. The man is smirking as she passes him by. BRITTNEY (con’t) But if you want to know my real name? Well then your just gonna have to come inside and find me. Brittney turns her back to the man and heads toward the revolving doors of the restaurant with as much poise as she 4 can muster, careful not to look back. She is still caught up in the moment, so she gives a quick turn around to look at the man, then flips her hair back around and walks forward. As she walks she gives a face of sheer shock and embarrassment at her last comments, but then straightens up before she gets to the door. At the doors, she pauses, takes a deep breath, and enters. As she walks away, it is easy to notice a huge brown stain on her butt. The Man smiles very impressed as he watches her walk away. 5 Side 2: Brittney and Justin - Bathroom Brittney heads towards the bathrooms, distractedly brushing at the mud on her dress as she hurries away. INT. BATHROOM - CONTINUOUS Brittney heads toward the sinks, rummaging through her oversize purse. She looks up at herself in the MIRROR and lets out a GASP. She looks at the front of her dress and lets out another gasp, she then turns around and looks at the stain on her butt, she lets out another gasp. She uses a wet PAPER TOWEL to clean a little mud off of her face, then gets to work on removing the mud from her clothes. She rubs another wet paper towel over the dirt spots. She takes one last look in the mirror at herself, tilts her head to the side and shrugs her shoulders. Before she turns to leave, a stall door opens, and the Man comes out. He heads toward the sink next to Brittney, pretending not to notice her. Brittney, with wide eyes and pursed lips, stares incredulously at him. The Man washes his hands and then casually looks into the mirror and meets Brittney’s gaze. JUSTIN Hey there, Muddy Girl! Oh my bad, I mean M.G. Wait is it too soon to call you that? Brittney gives him a sarcastic reaction. The man continues to wash his hands. JUSTIN (CONT’D) You know, with the way things are going, it looks like you’re the one who’s turning out to be creepy. The Man smiles and leans a little closer to Brittney. He winks at her and then motions his eyes toward the mirror. 6 Brittney breaks his gaze and looks back to the mirror to discover THREE URINALS behind her. Brittney turns a shade of beet red. She throws her hands over her eyes and peeks through the fingers. BRITTNEY Oh my God! I didn’t know this was the Men’s Bathroom! The man shakes his head. JUSTIN This is not your day, M.G. First that mysterious pot hole outside and now someone has switched the bathrooms on you. For a couple beats neither of them move a muscle. Then, Brittney slowly puts her makeup back in her purse, checks herself in the mirror one last time and turns to the door. She flips her hair as she heads out of the bathroom, her HIGH HEELS ECHOING behind her. With her hand on the bathroom door, the man loudly clears his throat. Brittney turns to him and looks him over once more. BRITTNEY It’s Brittney. The man smiles. She exits.
