Casting Net: Jean-Claude Van Damme is in final talks for Kickboxer, a franchise remake of the 1989 action film that kickstarted his career. John Stockwell is directing the film, which stars Dave Bautista, Alain Moussi, and Georges St. Pierre. The story follows Kurt Sloane (Moussi), a man who travels to Thailand and learns how to kickbox in order to face his brother’s killer, Tong Po (Bautista). Van Damme starred as Sloane in the original, and is eyeing an updated version of Sloane’s teacher, Master Chow. If it’s finalized, he will be replacing Tony Jaa who had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Jim McGrath wrote the script. The film began shooting in New Orleans this week, and will later shoot in Thailand. Will Ferrell will star in an untitled film about the competitive world of a Shakespearean theater company. David Guion and Michael Handelman are writing the script; together, they also wrote the screenplay for the upcoming Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. Specific plot details, and the film’s director, have not yet been announced. Allen Leech, known for his work on Downton Abbey and The Imitation Game, has signed on for Jonathan Mostow‘s Hunter’s Prayer. Sam Worthington and Odeya Rush star. Paul Leyden, Oren Moverman, John Brancato, and Michael Ferris adapted Kevin Wignall‘s novel, For The Dogs, for the screen. The story follows Lucas (Worthington), an assassin who connects with his target, Ella (Rush), causing him to fail his assignment, and become a target as a result. Leech will take the part of Lucas’ former boss. Courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety and Deadline
