Castro wasnt even pro-Soviet to begin with and Frank Sturgis, the guy whom the CIA later put in charge of the operation to topple him, actually trained Castro and Che in the Sierra Maestre and supplied them with guns. It was the USs insistence on returning the island to the likes of Meyer Lansky, Bugsy Seigel, and Lucky Luciano, even paying the mafia to assassinate Castro, that forced Castro to seek help from Moscow. Those were the days when the FBI denied that the mafia even existed. The implications of the US-Cuba rapprochement does not equal an improvement in relations with Iran. Iran can only avoid confrontation with the US if it becomes a US protectorate, as in the days of the Shah. The US will not tolerate an independent, sovereign oil power. Saddam got taken down even though he was a US ally. Gaddafi got taken down even though he took the rap for something he didnt do, viz. Lockerbie. And just look at what the CIA did to Chavez. Iran cant avoid the same fate. The only thing that keeps it going are its missiles but the new Patriots and Arrows are so accurate and deployed in such numbers that Iran has all but lost its deterrent. If it signs a deal giving up its nukes, it just becomes an easier target because not having to race a nuke deadline will give all of Irans enemies more time to prepare their attack and weaken Iran further with sanctions.
