Cat Waiting on a mouse at the “offering table” Painted limestone (h 9; l 12.5)cm parodic ostrakon - Dynasty XIX-XX This figured ostracon belongs to the category of satirical representations. These show scenes of animals, most often cats and mice, using both parody and role inversion. Their composition is inspired by funerary scenes and temple reliefs. On these satirical ostraca, cats play the role of servants of a mouse. This example from the Brussels museum shows a mouse sitting in front of a table of offerings, smelling the fragrance of a lotus flower which he holds in his left hand. holding what looks like a scrap of cloth .On the other side of the table is a cat, standing on its back legs holding a fan with his right hand…. meanwhile the left one takes advantage of the offerings?
