Cat declawing is one of the few surgeries we perform at WHPC. - TopicsExpress

Cat declawing is one of the few surgeries we perform at WHPC. While I counsel owners of the significance of this surgery including the importance of pain control, that it is indeed amputation of the end of each finger, and that their cats MUST be 100% indoor cats following the surgery for the rest of their lives, I am willing to perform this procedure. I feel that cats prone to destructive behaviors may otherwise end up homeless, outdoors, or in shelters if they are not declawed. If declawing a cat will improve the bond with the owners and therefore its quality of life, I feel it can be beneficial. The surgery is done here using a scalpel blade for accuracy and to minimize soft tissue trauma (instead of the nail trimmers many vets still use) and we do cold laser and homeopathy afterwards to minimize pain and speed healing. People opposed to declawing are free to leave their cats fully armed, but those still desiring declaws after education about the procedure will not be turned away.
