On Christmas Day a Soyuz rocket took a Russian military satellite aloft, and on 27 December the Chinese orbited another of their (presumed military) Yaogan series. In between, a second Russian launch—this one from Baikonur—took up an Earth-observation satellite with a less sinister purpose. The main purpose for the Resurs-P No. 2 mission is to look at the ground in many wavelengths, useful for determining what vegetation and in particular crops are doing, but it has a hitchiking payload that is of great interest to astronomers. - See more at: sen/blogs/chris-lintott/catching-cosmic-rays
