Catching up to the rest of its Bay Area counterparts, San Mateo County finally STOPS ICE HOLDS in the jails!! We helped launch the San Mateo County Coalition for Immigrants Rights in 2010 when Secure Communities first went live, and when we saw ACJP families struggle with the threat of deportation. This powerful coalition also helped stopped the practice of juvenile ICE holds at Hillcrest, and now -- thanks to community pressure and after the recent Oregon decision ruling that detainers were unconstitutional -- the Sheriff finally stops routine ICE holds in the jails and reserving them for only under rare circumstances. Got more work to do, but no doubt... this is a BIG win!
