Catching up with the lovely Maina Bhagat at Oxford Bookstore - TopicsExpress

Catching up with the lovely Maina Bhagat at Oxford Bookstore today, we ended up swapping funny stories (of which she has many!) instead of focusing exclusively on the book launch of Fragments of Riversong tomorrow. I mentioned my gift for attracting odd people, who are perhaps drawn by the invisible brand on my forehead, urging them to come and chat with me. Dont worry if youve never noticed it, it just means youre normal ;-) Anyway, it reminded me of an incident when I was working at Grameen Bank, and I looked up from my desk to see a very tall, very dirty man standing in the office doorway - he wore a loincloth and carried a staff, but it was his matted dreadlocks and wild eyes that tipped me off that this was going to be one of *those* encounters... He did not disappoint. In a booming voice, he said, Ami shorporaj - ami jyanto shaap giley khai! (I am the Lord of Snakes. I swallow live snakes!) So how can I help you? I squeaked, acutely aware that he was blocking the only exit. Fortunately, a colleague walked by just then and realised that Mr Sharparaj didnt quite fit the profile of a typical visitor to the bank. He walked on and called security, who came to escort the reluctant snake lord out. Which left me with two questions. What had he *wanted*? And more importantly, out of hundreds of people in that building, why did he choose to bring his concerns to *me*??? But I guess we all know the answer to that! Remember that invisible nutjob-attracting brand on my forehead that I mentioned earlier...? :-D
