Cathleen from Arkansas recently shared her Student Success Story - TopicsExpress

Cathleen from Arkansas recently shared her Student Success Story with Math Solutions: I am a first grade teacher. One of my girls, I will refer to as Z, came from Kindergarten with an Academic Improvement Plan in Math. She was very withdrawn and showed very little confidence. I became trained in Cognitive Guided Instruction this year and utilized much content from Engage NY as well as cross checking with CCSS. I had the opportunity to read Number Talks from my Math Coach, which helped build my confidence in the delivery of math. Each day we had many conversations about math. This was the first time I was truly conversing WITH the kids about math concepts. I gave them the problem and asked them for the solution to the problem. Many days, Z would look around and attempt the problem and sometimes made an attempt to copy someone else for fear of doing it wrong. As the year progressed and conversations became deeper, I began noticing her solutions became a little bit deeper in her print and she started joining the conversation during share time on our ELMO. By mid-year Z had begun solving the problems using more details and I noticed the depth of her answers. By the end of third quarter, her answers contained equations, picture support and number bonds; sometimes related facts. Each problem I gave for CGI had 4 sets of numbers for the students to plug in to the problem so it was differentiated and also, gave me a deeper look at how some could solve the problem types using the language of the problem. Z finished the year as an A-B student with fluency in Math facts at 80% and was able to solve 2 digit addition and subtraction problems with very little support. She was one of the first to raise her hand to share daily and became quite the little mathematician. I am not sure which of us was more proud, but I know she forever touched my heart! Her stamina and determination to succeed was amazing! Thank you!
