Catholic Calendar and Daily Meditation Tuesday, March 11, 2014 Tuesday of the First Week of Lent Scripture from todays Liturgy of the Word: new.usccb.org/bible/readings/031114.cfm Isaiah 55:10-11 Psalm 34:4-5, 6-7, 16-17, 18-19 Matthew 6:7-15 A reflection on todays Sacred Scripture: When you pray, do not babble like the pagans. . . . The pagans multiplied words. They thought that the more they said, the better the gods would hear and the more likely it was, that the prayer would be answered. They knew that their prayers were in competition with hundreds or thousands of others and theirs had to be the best to be answered. That is not the way God is. He hears all prayers. We dont have to crowd out others with our prayers and pleas. Indeed, we need not tell God anything at all, though He delights when we do, because He knows what we need even before we ask. Our prayer can be simple and it can be short. That is not to say that repeating this simple prayer is multiplying words. No indeed, it is multiplying praise. When we pray in such a way, we are not trying to crowd out other prayerful people. No, we are adding our prayers to theirs and we are enveloping the world in a deep and protective blanket of prayer and praise. - JuandelaCruz
