Humans can put up with any amount of hardship, experience any number of difficulties and trials as long as hope of change and a better future exists. But the moment hope ceases, life instantly turns out to be meaningless. So, we must understand the reason and the efforts made by prophets Isaiah for instilling and keeping alive the hope of return in the people in exile. The preaching of John the Baptist, in fact, concerns the imminent fulfillment of this hope, albeit in a spiritual sense i.e. in the establishment of the Kingdom of God, that is why he is designated as the greatest of all prophets.
