Catholic Standard News Editor wins Int. Award The News Editor of the Catholic Standard, Mr. Damian Avevor, has been adjudged one of the winners of the International Journalism and Media Awards, 2013 in the category of Excellence in Journalism. He is the only Ghanaian Journalist among 25 winners of the Awards in eight categories chosen from over 2,000 competitors from all over the world. Other categories competed for were Women Issues, Inter-Religious Initiatives, Educom; Solidarity with Refugees; Photo Journalism; Titus Brandsma and Cardinal Foley. The triennial awards honour outstanding media professionals, publications and institutions worldwide, and recognize their exemplary contributions irrespective of all differences. The two major criteria for determining the Award Winners were content value and Journalistic presentation of stories and articles entered into the competition. Mr. Avevor entered the competition with three Articles titled: Taming HIV and AIDS, Empowering Persons with Physical Disabilities and Flamboyant Funerals. The International Awards for Excellence in Journalism won by Mr. Avevor and four other Journalists from Cameroon, Kenya and Congo D.R., honours outstanding Journalists and other Media Professionals from all domains and a good proportion are reserved for young media professionals below 35 years. The Awards will be conferred on the winners at the International Christian Organisation of the Media (ICOM) World Congress in Panama City, Central America from September 28 to October 6, 2013.The ICOM is a World Forum of Professionals and Institutions in Secular and Religious Journalism. The World Congress is organized under the auspices and with the collaboration of National Council of Journalism, National College of Journalists, Union of Panamanian Journalists and other national and Central American entities. It is a meeting point for internationally minded women and men to get together once in three years and analyse developments in today’s world from journalistic and media perspectives. Mr. Avevor joined The Catholic Standard as a Student Reporter in 2000 and became a full time Reporter in 2003. By dint of hard work, he was promoted Senior and Chief Reporter in 2006 and 2009 respectively and appointed News Editor in 2010. He is a member of the Catholic Association of Media Practitioners, Ghana (CAMP-G), Ghana Journalists’ Association (GJA) and the Institute of Public Relations (IPR), Ghana. He holds Diploma Certificates in Journalism, Newspaper Reporting and Business Management and Administration as well as Certificates in English, Writing Skills, Media Ethics, HIV/AIDS Reporting and Health Reporting.
