Cathy Elizabeth Hayslett and I just returned from watching the superb new movie The Theory of Everything. Its the story of Stephen Hawking, the modern-day Albert Einstein and his struggles with adapting to life with Lou Gehrigs Disease. There are so many good things about this movie it is difficult to know where to begin. Perhaps the best line is when Hawking (played by Eddie Redmayne) is told by his doctor that he has Lou Gehrigs Disease. When the doctor completes the list of things that are going to go wrong with Hawkings body, Hawking asks What about the brain? Its unaffected and Hawking goes on to not only earn his PHD in Theoretical Physics at Cambridge University but to become the most well-known and respected physicist in the world. Hawking was diagnosed with Lou Gehrigs Disease when he was 21 or 22 years old. At the time he was given 2 years to live. This was in 1963. Fifty-one years later hes still alive and his brain is still exploring the inner workings of the universe. Dont let that part of the subject concern you. Physics isnt rammed down the viewers throats. In fact other than Hawkings life long quest to find the single eloquent equation that explains everything there are no places in the film where youll feel like you are back in North Hall listening to one of Ernie Petersons lectures in Calculus Based Physics 252. Perhpas one of the most important parts of the movie is experiencing the determination of Hawkings wife Jane who seems to want to single-handedly defeat the disease for him. In the end, the movie also addresses the topic in wedding vows about sticking by someone in sickness and in health. Youll have to watch the movie to find out what I mean. The performances by Eddie Redmayne (Hawking) and Felicity Jones (Jane Hawking) are both worthy of an Oscar nomination and given the adversity that Hawking continues to endure, and how Redmayne portrayed him, I wouldnt be surprised if Redmayne doesnt receive the Oscar for Best Actor. This is a movie that you simply cannot go wrong watching. I promise you will not sit through it without at least drying your eyes 7 or 8 times. Go watch it. imdb/title/tt2980516/?ref_=nv_sr_1
