Cathy Jordan had to prove to the government that she was still alive after she passed her expiration date in 1991. Twenty-three years later, shes still going strong, despite doctors diagnosing her with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in 1986 and telling her she only had five years to live. Her secret? Smoking marijuana. Its her medicine, said Cathys husband, Bob Jordan. Its no different than someone taking cancer medication. Thats a controversial take on an issue at the forefront of Florida politics as the public considers a proposed constitutional amendment on the Nov. 4 ballot that would legalize medical marijuana in the state. The Jordans have become the faces of medical marijuana in Florida and have grown their own pot for 20 years to treat Cathys ALS, also known as Lou Gehrigs Disease. The Manatee County Sheriffs Office raided their home in February 2013, but the state attorneys office declined to file charges. In response, the Jordans filed a lawsuit against the sheriffs office -- led by Sheriff Brad Steube, a vocal opponent of Amendment 2 -- to recover the value of the marijuana plants deputies seized. The amendment addresses nothing in terms of growing cannabis; it only allows for marijuanas use in medical cases. Spencer said thats one of the problems with the particular language of the amendment -- it doesnt specify where people who qualify for medical marijuana would get it, and growing it would remain illegal. Cathy Jordan is the president of the Florida Cannabis Action Network, which pushes for cannabis reform throughout Florida. The Jordans have met with legislators in Tallahassee to push for legalizing medical uses for cannabis, including the Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act, adopted this year, that approved medical use of the low-yield Charlottes Web strain.
