Caught this on Illinois Times website this morning and got a chuckle out of it, does this make Illinois Times the new MYTHBUSTERS?.... Calvin “It’s Not Me” Christian III has always insisted that he is not the brainchild behind Springfield Leaks, the on-again-off-again website that thrives on anonymity and inside-the-yellow-tape stories involving police. Case in point: When Illinois Times ran across Christian at Illinois State Police headquarters in the spring of 2013 and asked how things were at Springfield Leaks, he said he wasn’t part of the outfit. Back then, Springfield Leaks, whoever they may be, said anonymity was crucial because revealing the identity of whomever is behind the website could mean danger and possible prosecution. We at Illinois Times were subsequently lambasted by Springfield Leaks, which somehow got the idea that we thought Christian was the man behind the curtain. “Ha Ha Ha…Illinois Times Reporter Gets It Wrong,” was the headline above the anonymous post on Springfield Leaks in the spring of 2013. Fast forward to present day, when the city of Springfield, as part of its defense of a federal lawsuit filed against the city by Christian, subpoenaed Google and Wild West Domains, which sells domain names, to learn who owns and operates springfieldleaks. Springfield Leaks was not amused and so attempted to quash the subpoenas. It didn’t work. By the time Springfield Leaks lawyered up, Google had already turned over documents, and Wild West complied with the subpoena after U.S. Magistrate Judge David Bernthal rejected Springfield Leaks’ plea to remain anonymous. And what name appears as the buyer of the domain name in documents obtained via subpoena? Calvin Christian. We’re just sayin’.
