Cayman Rugby Union Media Release News Items. Men’s National XV’s Program Update – 19 March 2014 Tours and Tournaments • We have confirmed the dates with NACRA for the upcoming Caribbean Championships. Game 1 will be away to Bermuda on Saturday 7th June and Game 2 will be at home vs USA South on Saturday 14th June. • In addition to the Caribbean Championship games, we have confirmed a one off test against Bahamas to be held in Freeport on Saturday May 3rd and are currently seeking IRB approval to have this as a sanctioned test match. • We will shortly be starting discussions with the CRFU to potentially arrange a Club Select team to play against the National XV on Saturday May 10th. Training and High Performance Plan Dave Clancy is leading the Strength and Conditioning training for the mens XV’s program and we are seeing good results on the stats and scores of the athletes involved. We will be commencing block 3 of our training plan shortly which will involve full team training on 2 nights a week at the South Sound pitch. Training times and locations for the next 3 weeks will be advised to the players through the coaching team. From Monday 7th April through to the end of the NACRA Championship training will be on Monday and Wednesday nights with the aim to try and secure the Truman Bodden stadium for the Monday night session. Squad Announcement We anticipate announcing a training squad in the next 3 weeks. Players may be moved in or out of the squad as performance is assessed by the National Team coaches during the national team training block and the performance of non-selected eligible players in the Appleton Challenge Cup. Strength &Conditioning notes: All national XV’s players were tested over the weeks 3rd March to 12th March. Compromising of Strength, Power, Fitness and Body Composition using the equipment CRFU has at its disposal. There have been encouraging improvements across the board with the players starting to approach the international tier 1 nation standards that I have set them. The players will be re-tested in April as we enter into another national training block with a squad which will be selected based on their scores and performances to date for their respective clubs in the Alex Alexander Memorial Tournament. The squad has just entered a 4 week training block which is focusing on the areas of power, speed and force development having gone through a tough block of strength work and functional conditioning over the past 4 weeks. With the assistance of our Caymanian intern Edward Westin, who is studying sport and exercise science at Loughborough University. The Cayman Rugby union has extended its S&C the whole way down to under 10’s over the past few months with the recent initiation of a player testing protocol to identify areas of the young athletes athletic performance which can be improved over the coming months and years as they develop through the junior rugby program and academy to competing for Cayman at under 19 and senior national level. The CRFU is running an IRB rugby strength and conditioning level 1 course on March 22nd with the aim to further the understanding of S&C across all age groups and the respective coaches. This course will be run by Cayman rugby’s S&C coach Dave Clancy. Womens National 7’s Program Update – 19 March 2014 Tournaments & Tours March 29th - Kick off to the Womens 7s Spring League. The league will run from March until the end of May with 3 new look teams - • The Kirk Freeport All Diamonds • The OMNI Sharks, • The John Doak Architect Lady Iguanas. The player draft for the Womens league takes place on Wednesday 26th March in the CRFU clubrooms. March 29th - Cayman Womens Rugby Fundraiser - The ladies will use the launch of their new league and the big Semi Final day of the DART Vase to run a fundraising event at the club. There will be lots of activities, an opportunity to get your Car Washed by the girls, and a Huge Raffle with prizes. April 26th - Texas Womens 7s Tournament - The Cayman Women travel to Allen, Texas to take part in the first annual Texas Womens 7s Tournament, alongside teams like the Dallas Lady Quins, the Little Rock Stormers, the Allen Griffins and the Turks & Caicos National team. Training & High Performance Plan Dave Clancy has recently put the girls through sprint and beep tests to provide a base line fitness level. Coach Buckley, Grizz and Dave Clancy are due to meet shortly to discuss implementation of a S&C plan for the National Team members. Cayman Referees Society Program Update - 19 March 2014 Regional Tournaments Cayman appointees to the NACRA panel for Jamaica/Turks and Jamaica/Mexico have been confirmed, reflecting the high regard in which the regional body holds our local officials. Jamaica vs Turks & Caicos on 17th May 2014 will be refereed by Alasdair Robertson, AR1/Replacement Referee will be Justin Colgan and Match Commissioner Dave Robinson. Jamaica will provide the AR2 and any additional officials as required. Cayman will also provide most of the team for Jamaica v Mexico on 7th June 2014, which will be refereed by Dave Sherwin. Replacement Referee will be Ben Cullen and Match Commissioner Dave Robinson and Jamaica will again provide the AR2 and any additional officials. Cayman/USA South on 14th June will be refereed by a Canadian panel official with all other posts filled by Cayman panel members. Men’s, Domestic Competitions. The 2014 DART Alex Alexander XV a side Championship came to a close on Saturday with the Queensgate Pigs Trotters trotting off winners for only the second time in two decades. The long awaited championship came at the expense of the Advance Fire and Plumbing Buccaneers who played wel but were outdone by a strong and determined Pigs side. In the other game the John Doak Iguanas only had to draw or win to secure their second title in a row against a Fidelity Storm side that had not had a win all season. The Storm however had other ideas and for the second year in a row played giant killers beating the Iguanas and opening the door for the Queensgate Pigs to take the title. Next up is the Appleton Challenge Shield. The National Rugby Sevens is taking a break as the National Mens fifteens gear up for their upcoming international season. Many of the players double duty for the sevens anf fifteen Greenlight RE In School program is in full operation currently delivering programs at Clifton Hunter, Triple C, and St Ignatius. Now in Year 2 of the 5 year schools development plan over 3000 children will receive Rugby In School sessions Island wide before September 2014. Maples Rugby Academies Now running four afternoons per week as well as the Maples Community Rugby each Saturday. The programs are reaching close to saturation point with well over 350 children participating each week from the ages of 2 to 19. The U10, U12, U14 and U16 are all gearing up for their annual tournament which will take place in Freeport Bahamas from May 2 to 5th and will include a chance to watch the Cayman National senior men playing in a ful international warm up match against the Bahamas in Freeport on May 3rd. In total 120 players will travel to Freeport on the weekend.
