Turkish Rotarians in RI District 2420 made a lasting impact in Istanbul by constructing a $1.5 million high school for gifted students, many of whom lacked access to a better education. The 45,000-square-foot, five-story building accommodates 500 students. Tuition is free, but applicants must pass a rigorous entrance examination to earn their place in the school, which holds classes in grades 10-12 and has a one-year college preparatory curriculum. In addition to aggressive fundraising, Rotarians supplied building materials and contributed their vocational skills as engineers, technicians, electricians, and architects. In a little more than six months, RI District 2420 (Turkey) raised enough money from 83 Rotary clubs as well as community leaders to construct a high school for gifted students in Istanbul
