Celebrate World Fisheries Day by Planting Mangroves with Grow-Trees! This day raises awareness regarding over-fishing, habitat destruction and other serious threats to the sustainability of our marine and freshwater resources. Mangroves are considered to play the most important role in fisheries. They provide nursery habitat for many wildlife species, including commercial fish and thus contribute to sustaining the local abundance of fish and shellfish populations. In South Florida, 75% of the game fish and 90% of the commercial species are dependent on mangrove ecosystems. An estimated 75% of the commercially caught prawns and fish in Queensland, Australia, depend on mangroves for part of their life cycles and on nutrients exported from the mangroves to other ecosystems. Over the past 50 years, approximately 30% of global mangrove cover and seagrass areas have been lost. Much of this loss has occurred in the Asian region. These declines are cause for concern because mangroves and seagrasses have long been considered important habitats for coastal fisheries. By planting trees in mangrove projects, you will be providing coastal communities with a livelihood, protecting the coast and creating a habitat for marine life.
