Celebrate the 29th Annual Southwest Community Festival Week full of fun activities showcasing Southwest Jefferson County kicks off in October Drawing more than 20,000 people to its main event each year, the Southwest Community Festival is one of the biggest community events in Louisville celebrating and showcasing the area’s residents, businesses, and culture. Sponsored by Kentucky One Health and Louisville Gas and Electric Company, this year’s festival will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Sun Valley Park, 6505 Bethany Lane in Valley Station. This year’s new event, Concert in the Park, kicks off the week leading up to the festival. The concert will be held Friday, Oct. 3, 2014 from 6 -10 p.m. at Sun Valley Park and will feature live music. Guests can bring their own chairs to the park. Other events leading up to the festival include the annual elementary school spelling bee on Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. at Valley High School, 10200 Dixie Highway, and a pancake breakfast held at the Sun Valley Community Center on Oct. 11, which officially begins the 29th Annual Southwest Community Festival. Breakfast will be served from 8 -11 a.m. and includes sausage biscuits, as well as biscuits and gravy. Proceeds raised by the breakfast go to Southwest Community Ministries. Free festival events include: hundreds of arts, crafts and food booths showcasing Southwest Jefferson County; the car and motorcycle show from River City Street Rods, Inc.; Kids City with free games and inflatable’s sponsored by Valley View Church; and Teen City, Toddler Town, Men’s tent, and a Senior Tent with bingo and drawings. Festival goers can also dance the day away from 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. to tunes from The Monarchs, who will play live music from the ‘50s and beyond. Free shuttles to the car show and other festival events will be provided by South Jefferson Christian Church.
