Celebrating Kiambu heroes By Muthuri Ungi Robert Githire was born in April 1990, in Thigio village, Limuru constituency of Kiambu County, being the second-born in a family of 3. He got his nursery education at Day Star Nursery School in Thigio Limuru. In 1996, he joined Gatuura Primary School where he sat for his KCPE exams in 2003. He was the best student in his school and in the region. He then joined Thigio Boys Secondary School in Limuru, where he voluntarily decided to be a day-scholar. While in form 1, in 2004, Robert wrote his first story book, “Emily’s Heavy Burden,” although it has not yet been published. He was the Managing Editor of his secondary school magazine and an active member and contributor to the Journalism, Wildlife and Debating Clubs. While in high school he wrote many short stories and poems. He was among the top students in the school in 2007 KCSE exams. In September 2008, he joined Kenyatta University School of Law in Parklands, Nairobi, to pursue a Bachelor of Laws degree. This was after training in International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) Courses and also being a primary school teacher at Limuke Academy – Limuru. His talent in writing has been evident from his time in primary school, where his teachers recommended his compositions to his classmates. The writing was demanding in terms of the contents input and it took him almost 2 years of thorough researching, editing and proof-reading a Career Guide manuscript to guide high school and college students. But he got his greatest breakthrough in writing in 2010, after he published his best-seller career dictionary called “My Dream Career.” He got more than 20 media interviews in less than two months, all of them giving him platform to elaborate on his career guidance book. The book is still one of the top career manuals to Kenyan schools. Not waiting for the dust to settle, Robert worked hard and published two more books – A novel and a collection of short stories. The novel, “Endangered Species,” elaborates on the hardships that youths face, based a fictitious story and characters, but with every day-to-day real-life scenarios. It was published in August 2011. Robert also edited his dozens of short stories into a book, “Campus Life is not a Bed of Roses & Other Stories.” It was published in a colourful ceremony in June 2012. Robert is also a renowned, recognised and honoured Motivational and Career Speaker. As of September 2014, he had given talks in more than 150 schools, colleges and other youth forums. Most notable among them include Zetech College (Nairobi), KU School of Law (Parklands), Thika District Youth Forum, Aga Khan School (Nairobi), among others.
