Celebrating VE Day with the Russian Embassy and Alexandrovna. Well this turned out to be a very good day. An old woman asked to know what town I had based the town on and I told her it was generic for Belarus and western Russia in 1944. She told me it was very accurate and as it turned out this wonderful lady is Maria Alexandrovna Mitrofanova and she was a radio operator with a Spetsnaz part of the 3rd Belorusian Front just before Operation Bagration. They were parachuted behind enemy lines and she called in information on German positions. The town she said could easily be any of the hamlets around Smolensk. She even showed me her Frontovik badge. For me it was great meeting her and I think she was pleased to find a listener who had reasonable knowledge on the subject. A rewarding day :)
