Celebrating a birthday today, Roderick David Rod Stewart. An entire generation or two has come along without knowing exactly what he meant to many listeners back when he was in his late 60s-early/mid 70s prime. A distinctive, unique voice that could make you dance or break your heart, sometimes in the same song. A winning stage presence; cocky, but rascally and roguish...and yet, when he sang that certain song, you were convinced he meant it and wasnt just mouthing words others wrote. Of course, he soon became insanely popular, his band splintered, the money got bigger as the music became slicker, blander, bloated, and superficial (like a lot of music and musicians of his age group, to be fair), and he eventually became a parody of himself as well as a symbol of everything that was wrong with the popular music biz, even as those of us who chose to remember when could only shake our heads and sigh. These days, the voice also a shadow of its former self, he is still plugging away when the mood strikes him, still touring, singing standards and even attempting songs by current songwriters as a gesture towards a sort of relevance...its no longer as flashy and trashy as it was, but its not, nor will it ever be the same. I gave up on him ever making truly memorable music a long time ago, but I still will listen to anything from Beck-Ola to A Night on the Town and raise a glass. Heres to better days. youtu.be/Eqho7jpQjJ8
