Celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, Alta Sierra Country - TopicsExpress

Celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, Alta Sierra Country Club is a gem, with its members and staff welcoming. In 2005, ASCC had close to 500 members, today its around 130, hence the public play. However a course like this will not stay private for long, I think. Its design, challenge and rustic atmosphere is inviting and should be experienced. Well maintained, the conditional dependent on the season. Roughs and fairways aerated around the first of March, with the greens to follow around the first April. Right now, only 9th and 18th fairways have pellets scattered as well as around the rough, throughout the course. Tee boxes are great and so are the greens. I would imagine around May 1st would be a good time to experience ASCC in all its glory. This is mountain golf, so there are elevation changes with elevated tees along with descending, scenic greens. As well as elevated greens with ascending fairways. Not an easy walk but some members do it as well as a few of the residents in the area, getting out and enjoying the day. The design is a challenge yet short, boasting a 132 slope off the black tees, measuring under 6600 yds. I opted to hit from the golds, which measured a little under 6200 yds but still had a slope of 128. With lakes, creeks and thorny bushes , protecting the OB lines, you will lose golf balls. Greens are fair but brutal with subtle breaks around the holes and can sometimes break hard without fully understanding how well rolled these greens are. Fairways are flat with little undulation, with walking paths between tee boxes and fairways and sometimes from greens to the next tee box. The course protects the greens with mature trees and well sanded bunkers. This is not a grip and rip it course like Mather or Arcade Creek. Teeing off with a 5 wood or a hybrid on most holes may be the smart play, even while playing from the back tees. Off highway 49, this secluded getaway can help you forget where you came from if you are used to the sound of traffic in your golf swing. You may even consider being a member, wish I could.
