Innovation is key to meeting many of todays development challenges, and the primary force for innovation is fundamental research. Without it, there would be no science to apply. Faradays experiments on electricity, for example, were driven by curiosity but eventually brought us electric light. No amount of R&D on the candle could ever have done that.
