Celebrity Gorgeous Gretsch users: Chet Atkins again, but some fifteen years earlier and with a unique Gretsch product. Atkins was playing an early Gretsch Chet Atkins Hollow Body 6120 in orange with DeArmond pickups, but in looking for a guitar more to his taste he specified an enclosed body (dummy F-holes) with a Bigsby and the new Ray Butts-designed humbucking pickups which would become the FilterTrons. These two pictures are thought to be of the same guitar; the first picture has the guitar top finished black but the rims and back still unfinished, or possibly finished white, while the second shows the instrument completely finished in black. Atkins nicknamed it Dark Eyes and used it as a basis on which to design the original Country Gentleman. At one stage it was fitted with small individual pickup elements set into the neck between the upper frets beneath the low E and A strings, intended to provide separate bass notes output which would be passed through an octave divider to accentuate Atkinss alternating bass lines. Later he gave the guitar to a friend, whence it passed to collector Scott Chinery and to Chinerys friend Tom Doyle, who recently offered it for auction.
