Central City, Main Street after the flood of 1893. Thomas, A. M., photographer. CAPTION: Workmen with shovels and picks on Main Street around 3:45 p.m. as pedestrians watch them clear the street after the flood. The men are wearing hats and work clothes; the onlookers are wearing suits and dresses, two are carrying umbrellas. Main Street is covered with piles of dirt and rocks that were dragged into town by the water. The facades that surround the people include the Dostal block, the Harris block, the Roworth building, and the I.O.O.F. building. The I.O.O.F. building has Odd Fellows Hall painted on it, and as a sign that reads Restaurant. The Hawley block building has several signs, including: California Powder and Fuse Groceries Boots & S. and The Hawley Mose. Co. Across the street the Shaffnit building, in which there is a furniture store, has a clock attached to it. City Hall and Nevada Street are in the background. *NOTE: In order to view a much higher quality version of this photo (which will retain great detail upon enlargement), click on the following link (which will take you to the Digital Collection at DenverLibrary.org.) digital.denverlibrary.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/p15330coll22/id/209/rec/1
