Central University of Jharkhand campus gets top green rating TNN | Jun 6, 2013 RANCHI: The upcoming permanent campus of Central University of Jharkhand in Ranchi has received a five-star Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA), the highest national rating for eco-friendly buildings. The varsity is the first among all the other 12 central universities to get this recognition. The permanent campus of CUJ is being constructed on 500 acres of land allotted by the state government at Cheri Manatu in Kanke block. The construction work at the site started in March 2012 and, as of now, the university is operating out of a temporary fabricated building belonging to a central panchayat institute at Brambey. N P Garg, officer on special duty (OSD) for the project, said there are various criteria for securing the five-star rating from GRIHA and all of them have been fulfilled by the university. "Based on the site selection and planning, conservation and efficient utilization of resources, building operation and maintenance and innovation points, we have secured 65 points from GRIHA. We are expecting to achieve more than 85 points once the first phase of the construction is complete," he added. CUJ vice-chancellor D T Khating said the permanent campus is being constructed without disturbing the eco-system of the area. "Twelve companies have been engaged for the construction and they are being very careful about not hampering the natural flora and fauna of the place. The work is being done keeping in mind that 70% of the total area will consist of flora and fauna and the remaining 30% will be used for construction," he said. The master plan of the university campus includes 32 blocks -- comprising academic and hostel complexes for boys and girls, staff quarters, a helipad, a bus-stop, an administrative block and a library for 8000 students. Boats will also be a available for students to travel from one place to another on the campus. The university will also set up a solar park to generate power and a dam will also be constructed on the premises to conserve rainwater. GRIHA awards different levels of certification (one to five stars) based on the score. CUJ garnered 65 points to become the first university among all the central universities in the country to secure a five-star rating. The campus designs have been prepared by a team of 32 architects from various parts of the world, inclding the United States, Britain, Germany and Singapore.
